Canada’s political leaders need to rally to face one of the most serious economic threats in our history
Canada does not need a new cabinet, Canadian Future Party leader Dominic Cardy said in reaction to today’s shuffle.
It needs a new government, one not led by Justin Trudeau.
In the face of one of the biggest threats to the Canadian economy in our history, a floundering government in its death throes cannot effectively defend our economic security and sovereignty, said Cardy.
“President-elect Donald Trump’s threat to impose 25 per cent tariffs on Canada will have a devastating effect on both countries’ economies and will make previous crises look like a mild recession,” said Cardy.
“In this moment of national crisis, we need all our elected representatives to put aside political differences and the petty sniping that comes with that, and focus all efforts on protecting our country.”
Cardy reiterated his call for a unity government, comprised of representatives from all parties in the House of Commons. Unity governments have a strong precedent in the Westminister Parliamentary system when jurisdictions are facing crisis, he said, and Canada is certainly facing a crisis.
“Prime Minister Trudeau is putting a band aid on a wound gushing blood, as cabinet ministers are resigning and significant numbers of his caucus are calling for his departure,” said Cardy. “He has clearly lost the confidence of Canadians.
“This is a recipe for disaster. Bullies smell weakness and we are facing a bully right now, and we are facing it with a hugely weakened government.”
It is ultimately not the Prime Minister’s job to put his political party’s survival over the country’s. And it is certainly not his job to put his own personal survival over the country’s. But that is where we’re at with this Prime Minister.
The same is true of opposition parties when the pressing issue facing the country is an external threat to our security.
“Today’s shuffle misses the point,” said Cardy. “No matter how capable or skilled some of these individuals may be, and I know several of them are, this is a superficial cosmetic surgery on a mortally wounded government.
“Our leaders need to get serious and take extraordinary measures as soon as possible and Justin Trudeau needs to get out of the way as soon as possible.”
